Akan Goldgewichte / Goldweights

Im Süden von Ghana leben die Ashanti, die zur Gruppe der Akan gehören. Bei den Ashanti war bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts Goldstaub ein anerkanntes Zahlungsmittel. Zum Abwiegen von Goldstaub wurden kleine, aus Bronze gegossene Gewichte verwendet. Die ältesten Goldgewichte sind geometrisch. Später kamen figürliche Gewichte auf, die Menschen, Tiere, Pflanzen und Gebrauchsgegenstände darstellen und sich auf Spruchweisheiten der Akan beziehen.

The Ashanti, who belong to the Akan group, live in the south of Ghana. Gold dust was a recognised means of payment among the Ashanti until the beginning of the 20th century. Small weights cast from bronze were used to weigh out gold dust. The oldest gold weights are geometric. Later figurative weights appeared, depicting people, animals, plants and everyday objects and referring to Akan proverbs.
